Can an AI assistant book a restaurant table?

That's what Gravel is designed for: you text what you want, it comes back with two options, and it acts on your pick. In the example conversation above you write “table for 4 friday, somewhere italian near maya’s.” Gravel answers with two options: “Trattoria Sole has 7:45 or Osteria Nona has 8:15. Both 4.7★. Which one?” You write “nona.”

In the example, Gravel books it and tells you: booked for 4 at 8:15 PM Friday, and the invite went to Maya, Sam and Jess. That is two short messages from you for a table, a time and a guest list.

How do I ask Gravel for a table?

Text it the way you would text a friend. Say how many people, which night, what kind of food and roughly where. A loose request is fine: “somewhere italian near maya’s” was enough.

Gravel is designed to narrow the choices to two, each with a time and a rating, so you can answer in a word. You do not scroll a list or compare tabs.

What does Gravel do after I pick a restaurant?

It is designed to book the table and invite the people you are going with. In the example it confirms the party size, the time and who got the invite, all in one message.

Your pick is the yes. There is no second question.

What stays in my control?

Nothing is booked until you choose. If neither option works, tell it what to change.

During early access, Gravel may hand you the last step, with the details ready, instead of finishing it itself.

Invites and messages to other people speak for you, and so does anything that costs money, so Gravel's defaults are conservative: it checks with you first. When Gravel acts for you, it presents itself as an AI assistant, never as a person. For each kind of action you can pick one of four levels, from just do it to hand it to me. See how it works. Text “pause” and all background work stops until you say so.

What does Gravel need access to?

Gravel works from the messaging app you already use, plus the email and calendar you connect. Connect a calendar (Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar, iCloud Calendar or any CalDAV calendar) and Gravel can see when you are free. It starts read-only and asks for more access the first time it needs it.

This example conversation was recorded in Apple's Messages app. During early access Gravel works in WhatsApp and Telegram, and iMessage is coming. The restaurants are examples, and Gravel has no partnership with them or with any restaurant. Gravel costs €12 a month; see pricing.

Questions

Does Gravel have partnerships with restaurants?

No. Trattoria Sole and Osteria Nona in the example conversation are made up, and Gravel has no partnership with them or with any restaurant.

Will Gravel book a table without asking me?

No. Gravel is designed to offer two options and book only after you pick one. It tells you what it will do before it acts, and it starts read-only.

Can I ask for a certain cuisine, night or neighborhood?

Yes. Describe what you want in your own words, like “somewhere italian near maya's.” In the example, Gravel replies with two options so your answer can be one word.

Does Gravel send invites to my friends on its own?

In the example it sends the invite after you pick. Writing to other people is the kind of action Gravel checks with you about by default, and you choose how much freedom it has for each kind of action.

Which messaging apps can I use to ask?

WhatsApp and Telegram during early access. iMessage is coming.

How much does Gravel cost?

One plan, €12 a month, with everything included. Gravel is in early access, so you join a waitlist.
